What a Fertility Plan Looks Like Before You Start Trying

Thinking about trying to conceive? Here is how a pre-conception fertility plan is built, from your labs to the 90-day window eggs develop in.

Maybe you want to get pregnant this year. Maybe you have already started and want something more deliberate than “keep trying and see what happens.” Either way, it helps to know what a fertility plan involves before you start one.

This is how I take new patients through the first few months. It describes a process. It does not predict an outcome. I cannot promise anyone a pregnancy, and I don’t.

Where this work fits next to your medical care

I am not your reproductive endocrinologist (RE). If you already have one, keep them. Their medical plan stays in charge. My work runs next to it: the groundwork, the timing, and the conditions your eggs and sperm mature in.

If you have not seen a fertility clinic yet, building a plan includes knowing when medical testing is the right next step. If I think you need an evaluation I can’t provide, I will tell you.

Step one: your story and the records you already have

The first conversation is about you: what has been going on, how long it has been going on, and what you have already tried.

Then I look at your paperwork, and I read every result, not just the summary at the bottom. Most people already have more data than they think. They just haven’t had anyone walk them through it. While I read, I’m also looking for what is missing. Gaps I see often:

  • A thyroid workup that stopped at TSH
  • Iron stores that were never checked, even when hemoglobin was
  • No context on blood sugar or inflammation
  • A uterine lining that was never clearly evaluated
  • A partner who has not had a semen analysis yet

If something important is missing, I’ll say so, and we’ll talk about how to get it ordered.

Helpful to bring to a first visit:

  • Lab results, with the dates they were drawn
  • Any cycle tracking you do (an app, temperature charts, ovulation tests)
  • A list of your current supplements and medications
  • Past fertility treatments, if you’ve had any, and how they went

Step two: the rest of your body gets a say

Your fertility doesn’t run separately from the rest of your health. So I ask about things that may not seem related at first: how you sleep, how your digestion behaves, whether you skip meals or fast, how hard you train, and what stress looks like in a normal week.

I also want the details of your cycle: its length, any pain, spotting, clots, and how you feel in the days before your period. In Chinese medicine these details are clues. Together they show the pattern I’m treating, and that pattern shapes the plan more than any one lab value does.

Step three: build the plan around a three-month runway

An egg spends roughly 90 days maturing before it is released. Ovulation is only the last stretch of that process. Sperm develop on a similar timeline. So the egg and sperm involved three months from now are already developing today.

That is why a plan before you start trying is measured in months, not single visits. It usually includes:

  • Acupuncture on a steady rhythm. Many patients start weekly. If you have complicating factors (fertility diagnosis, underlying health conditions, over 40) you may need three to four visits a month; at a minimum you will need two visits a month. The what to expect page covers visit length and what the first appointment is like.
  • Daily habits as an equal partner. Your treatment hour is a small part of your week. Food, sleep, movement, and stress fill the rest, and that is where much of the change actually happens.
  • Herbs only when they fit. If I use them, I formulate them for you, and we adjust them as your body responds.
  • Your partner, when there is one. Sperm follow the same three-month timeline, so the plan doesn’t stop at you. See male fertility support.

If you want a structured version of this timeline, the fertility programs page describes the 90 Day Fertility Reset.

What progress can look like before a pregnancy test

I won’t give you a success rate. What patients often notice while we work is more practical: steadier energy, deeper sleep, cycles that are more predictable or less painful, and digestion that settles down.

Just as important, they understand their own bodies better. When you know what your cycle is telling you, you stop guessing every month.

When the plan needs to change

Sometimes the records review or the first months of care point toward something specific. Then the plan changes to fit it:

Two ways to start

If you’d like to learn first, the free Fertility Reset Roadmap is five short emails about the mistakes I see most often. If you’re ready to go through your records together, request a consultation. You don’t have to take the course before we meet.

You can read about my training and background on the About Dr. Lisa page.

Educational only; not medical advice. Acupuncture and lifestyle support do not replace care from your fertility clinic or reproductive endocrinologist.
